William J. Maynard, DVM

William J. Maynard, DVM

Dr. William Maynard (Dr. Joe) graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. He received his B.S. in Biology from Wright State University. A longtime Springfield native, he graduated from Northwestern High School. He served as a combat medical specialist in the U.S. Army before continuing as an EMT in the civilian world. While taking classes at Wright State, he became more interested in the veterinary side of medicine and has been hooked ever since. He graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. He and his wife Nikki founded Mad River Veterinary Hospital in 2013. Dr. Joe particularly enjoys surgery. Outside of work, he spends time with his sons Ryan, Evan, and Luke, and playing frisbee with his pit bull Vanessa.

Nikki L. Maynard, DVM

Nikki L. Maynard, DVM

Dr. Nikki Maynard (Dr. Nikki) originally hailed from the Urbana area and graduated from Graham High School. She received her B.A. in Biology from Wittenberg University. After receiving her doctorate from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010, she spent three years as a mixed animal practitioner before starting a new adventure as a small animal practice owner. An avid horsewoman, she showed her Arabian horse in hunt seat and dressage for years. She lives for travel, hiking, theater and music, and torturing Joe with cooking experimentation. Most of her free time outside of work is devoted to caring for two young sons.

Megan Leese, DVM

Megan Leese, DVM

Dr. Megan Leese, a Veterinarian in Springfield Ohio, grew up in Indiana, and knew she wanted to be a veterinarian since she was three years old. She never wavered from her dream and made it a reality when she graduated from Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018. Since January 2019, she has enjoyed working at Mad River Veterinary Hospital. In her free time, Dr. Leese enjoys being outside when the weather is nice, and spending time with friends and family.

Jessica Rossel, DVM

Jessica Rossel, DVM

Dr. Jessica Rossel grew up in St. Marys.  She received her B.S. in biology from Wittenberg University.   In 2015, she graduated from The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine.  Before joining Mad River Veterinary Hospital in January 2022, she worked as a small animal general practitioner.  In her free time, she enjoys reading and spending time with her family.

Abigail Niswonger, DVM

Abigail Niswonger, DVM

Dr. Abigail Niswonger is originally from the Troy, OH area and is a graduate of Miami East High School. She graduated from Otterbein University with a B.S. in Zoo and Conservation Science. She earned her doctorate from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2022. Dr. Niswonger practices general surgery, dental cleanings and extractions, and preventative care at Mad River Vet Hospital. In her free time she enjoys gardening, music, and spending time with family and friends.

Helena Fox, DVM

Helena Fox, DVM

Dr. Helena Fox, a Veterinarian for small animals, grew up in the Northwest Arkansas region and graduated from Van Buren High School. She graduated from The Ohio State University in 2017 with her B.S. in Biology, then she graduated in 2021 from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Before joining Mad River Veterinary Hospital, she worked as a small animal general practitioner in the Pittsburgh area. In her free time, Dr. Fox enjoys watching movies, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

We are fortunate to have an amazing staff of technicians to assist in treating your pets. We here at Mad River Vet Hospital love animals and want to help you keep your pet happy and healthy. Veterinary Technicians at Mad River try to go above and beyond to give you the best customer service possible.

The Veterinary Technicians at Mad River Vet Hospital handle many of the same responsibilities that nurses and other professionals perform for physicians and hospitals – and, like veterinarians, they are trained to work with several species of animals. Here at Mad River Vet Hospital we care for dogs, cats, guinea pigs, ferrets, rabbits, rodents and other small animals.

Veterinary Technicians at Mad River are trained to:

-Obtain and record patient case histories and keep medical files up to date

-Administer fluids and blood products as prescribed by the veterinarian

-Use and maintain IV pump and other medical equipment to provide relief for your pet

-Administer and monitor anesthesia under the direction of a veterinarian

-Clean and maintain housing for animals

-Walk and comfort pets while they are in our care

-Provide specialized nursing care for injured or ill animals in our hospital

-Collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures

-Provide specialized nursing care and care for animals in our care

-Prepare animals, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures and dental procedures

-Assist in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures

-Position pets, expose and develop radiographs (X-rays)

-Advise and educate animal owners on general health matters

-Supervise and train practice personnel and mentor technician students

-Perform dental prophylaxes

-Educate the client on how to best care for their pet after procedures and surgeries

-Change bandages and casts

All veterinary technicians work under the supervision of our licensed veterinarians.

Our Receptionists

Our Receptionists

We have an amazing team of dedicated and passionate receptionists at Mad River Veterinary Hospital. Our receptionists' goal is to make your overall experience during your time here (or when you call in) as pleasant and productive as possible. Our reception staff strive to provide an excellent front of house service to all veterinary clients, and their pets, visiting or calling into our practice.

Upon walking in our front door, our receptionists strive to greet and assist each owner as they arrive and help them to feel relaxed, comfortable and welcome. Whether it is to pick up a medication from our pharmacy or bring a pet in to have a visit with one of our doctors, our receptionists are here to help! Our receptionists weigh your pet and check that your contact information is current before each appointment. Before you walk out the door our reception staff checks you out after your visit, makes sure you have all the information and paperwork you need after your visit, and can find the right person to answer your questions if you have forgotten anything. Our receptionists communicate with our doctors and veterinary technicians to keep your pet feeling their best.

When you call in, our staff is ready to assist you with appointment scheduling, directing messages to appropriate veterinary staff members, communicating with other veterinary offices, emailing or printing your pet's vaccine records, accepting payment for services, and other customer service related items. Our receptionists at Mad River Veterinary Hospital provide available appointment times and basic pricing information to callers, emphasizing quality and value of services provided and respond in a manner that encourages potential clients to visit our practice. With your help, we keep your pets records up to date in our system!
